DIVE WEST SUMBAWA AND MOYO ISLAND

Dive icon

Rugged coastlines, coral reefs, and healthy marine life in a region still off the radar for most divers. Sumbawa is still a yet-to-be-discovered destination which means healthy corals, both soft and hard, seasonal large pelagics, and everything in between.

Suitable for: All levels, several great beginner sites in the safety of islands with colourful reef life, leading up to advanced level sites with passing large animals and strong currents in the Lombok straight.

Marine life

  • Whale Sharks frequent Saleh Bay, where they feed on plankton near fishing platforms called bagan. Note: We are currently not organising whale shark trips due to concerns and complaints on the whale shark tourism in Saleh Bay

  • Manta rays are sighted occasionally near Kertasari when in season (August) near a drop off

  • Tuna, Spanish mackerel, and barracuda seen hunting on current-rich reefs

  • Ghost pipefish, nudibranchs, frogfish, seahorses can be found on sandy slopes and rubble patches around bottom of Saleh Bay

  • Turtles are common along coral slopes and walls of the 8 islands around Poto Tano

  • Vibrant anemone, cleaner shrimp, and moray eels and reeef sharks are frequent across most sites

Reef types & topography

  • Steep walls and ridges around Moyo

  • Kertasari & Poto Tano waters offer shallow hard coral reefs, perfect for relaxed diving

  • Northern Moyo: extensive coral slopes and bommies with acropora, porites, and brain coral colonies.

  • Muck sites: Southern Moyo and Saleh Bay host fine-silt bottoms, where macro creatures thrive

All dives are boat dives with the exception of a house reef in Moyo which is a beautiful reef right off the beach. This means two dives per boat trip and loads to see in different spots. New dive sites are being explored right at this very moment, and one of the unique points of diving in Sumbawa is diving new, unexplored sites - if that's your jam.
