DIVE WEST SUMBAWA (AND
MOYO)

Rash guardbagsmerch (5).png

Rugged coastlines, healthy reefs, and lively marine life in a region still off the radar for most divers. Sumbawa is still a yet-to-be-discovered destination which means frontier exploration galore!

West Sumbawa and Moyo offer diverse reef and current-influenced diving environments ranging from shallow coral gardens to deep blue walls. The local seascape is shaped by seasons and tidal regimes, producing variable visibility, currents, and surge patterns that influence habitat distribution and species behavior.

Sumbawa Adventure Dive is located in Kertasari, 30 minute drive from Poto Tano harbour. Our daily scuba dives take place in the Kertasari and Poto Tano waters, with special excursions down south the West coast, or to the divers' paradise - Moyo and Satonda islands.

A note on the large pelagics in the area:

  • Manta rays in Kertasari during season (August-December), and intermittently across dry season and low winds

  • Whale Sharks frequent Moyo and Saleh Bay waters, however we currently do not offer whale shark trips, due to the exploitative manner the sightings are organised over there.  We're focusing instead on marine experiences that meet our ethical and sustainability standards.

Reef types & topography

Reefs and slopes: Many sites start in shallow reef flats, with a gradual slope punctuated by coral outcrops. Below ~8–10 m, slopes become steeper, with mixed coral patches transitioning to sand channels or deeper reef terrace zones.

Drop-offs and walls: More exposed sites feature steep walls descending beyond recreational limits (>30 m). These provide vertical habitat complexity and pelagic access.

Open Blue: Some sites begin distant from land in blue water, with sandy bottoms at ~15–20 m and currents shaping drift routes.

Coral

The area supports diverse reef communities, including massive, branching, and plate corals. Reef structure tends to be vigorous where current and water clarity are higher, with larger framework corals forming complex substrate for fish and invertebrates.

Currents & Conditions

Currents are a defining feature here in West Sumbawa:

Tidal flows and seasonal swell create surge in shallow water and depth-dependent current shifts.

Current direction and strength can change with tide state, often increasing with depth below ~8–10 m.

Visibility fluctuates from low (<5 m) near river influence or sediment to excellent (10–25 m+) in blue water and current-washed reefs.

Seasonality

Monsoon influence: Southeast and Northwest monsoons modulate swell and current patterns, affecting site accessibility, visibility, and drift characteristics. During calm seasons, more northerly and easterly exposures are excellent for diving.

Marine Life (abundance of)

  • Manta rays - when in season

  • Rays (blue-spotted, eagle, mobula, devil) are very common

  • Plenty of sharks including many reef species and bamboo sharks near steep terrain

  • Large reef fish such as trevally and tuna making use of current corridors

  • Diverse schooling fishes associated with healthy reef structure

  • Sea turtles

  • Giant moray eels a frequent resident

  • Macro-enthusiasts have been happy with their macro dives, and more and more species have been sighted
